How do I get myself to not stop the gun?

The only reason that you will stop the gun is that your eyes have gone to the barrel. You must maintain complete focus on the target until you break it.  The instant the focus goes from the target to the barrel everything stops and that puts you behind the target. Then the barrel has to move faster than the target to catch up and your eyes will automatically go to the barrel, because they will always go to the fastest moving thing in the picture.
